After winning hearts with her viral content and chart-topping tracks like ‘Lamhe’ and ‘Savera’, Delhi-based singer-songwriter and producer Anubha Bajaj is back with her latest single, Jiya. Known for her unique blend of heartfelt songwriting and infectious melodies, Anubha has often been called the ‘Indian Charlie Puth’ by her community—an artist who transforms everyday moments into music. We had a candid interaction with her upon his latest release, here is what she has to say:
“Jiya” delves deep into themes of love and longing. Could you share the inspiration behind this track and how it reflects your personal experiences?
Honestly the inspiration behind Jiya was purely musical. I’ve been listening to a lot of Chill Pop music lately and I’m personally inspired by artists such as Zaeden, Jeremy Zucker, Lauv, etc. I really wanted to explore a similar soundscape and I’m so happy the record turned out the way it did. For the writing this was my first time collaborating with another songwriter – Ashwin Adwani, and it was an amazing experience. He’s very skilled in bringing out super emotional lyrics. It took hours of zoom calls and many scratch ideas coming together to get the final lyrics.

Your community often refers to you as the ‘Indian Charlie Puth’ due to your unique blend of heartfelt songwriting and infectious melodies. How do you feel about this comparison, and how does it influence your musical style?
‘Indian Charlie Puth’ came through my content series on Instagram where I take random sounds and make music out of them. The virality over that kind of format of reels was crazy at the time. I discovered Charlie Puth’s music production videos, and they inspired me to start my own series.
Following the success of tracks like “Lamhey” and “Savera”, how does “Jiya” represent your growth as an artist and producer in the independent music scene?
‘Jiya’ is my personal favourite in my discography to be honest. I think my taste in production and lyrical work has improved a lot over the years. The process of getting to a point where a song is made exactly the way I thought in my head has become much better and accurate. I think in the independent scene I’m ready to consistently put out music as I become more sure in what I want creatively.

Your Instagram series ‘Anything Can Be Music’ showcases your ability to find music in everyday moments. How does this perspective influence your songwriting process, particularly for a song like “Jiya”?
The two are separate worlds of their own, but just as the content creation comes from pure exploration, I think even original music comes from a lot of trial and error and really just finding the best ways to express my feelings.

You’ve performed at significant events, such as the closing ceremony of the World Table Tennis Contender Goa tournament. How do live performances impact your connection with your audience, and did any experiences from these events influence “Jiya”?
Live shows are my absolute favourite as I get to witness the love of so many people right in front of me rather than through the screen. As an artist I feel very responsible for giving the audience what they want musically, and shows are always a motivating space to become a better artist.
With a growing fanbase eagerly awaiting your releases, what can listeners look forward to in your upcoming projects? Are there any new directions or collaborations on the horizon?
I think they can definitely expect a lot more music this year. As for collaborations, that’s always a surprise!
Well, we all are geared up for the surprise, and going by what we have heard so far, it can only get better! But till the, stream ‘Jiya’ and immerse yourself in the essence of the song and music.
