Utsavi’s ‘Khata’ is a fine art of story telling

Mumbai, 10^th October 2024: After releasing many Hindi and English singles since her debut in 2020, Mumbai-based singer, songwriter and actor Utsavi Jha is set to release her debut Hindi EP Khata on the 18^th October.

Khata is themed around the stages of heartbreak occurring one after the other. While heartbreak is a familiar concept, it is one that is experienced differently by everyone. Each of the 5 songs in the EP explores a different stage. Khata is about the shock and confusion that occur when someone cuts communication, Mujhe jaane do is about the grief and heaviness it causes, Azaad is about the anger and relief upon realising that nobody deserves to be played in love, Tum kyun is about the relapse after the moment of empowerment has passed, and Kaisi hoon poocho na is when some time has elapsed as one realises they need to move on. Heartbroken and needing a channel of expression, Utsavi turned to music, as always, to find relief for her heavy feelings. Khatafeels like Utsavi’s journal entries about her experiences with heartbreak, attempting to make sense of how incomprehensible feelings came to her in waves and stages. This EP is honest, personal, vulnerable, uninhibited and original in the real sense of the terms.

Utsavi is also a highly visually-inclined artist. Wanting to visually tell the tales of her first EP in unique ways, Utsavi created several visual concepts that depict Khata in all its moods, colours and spectrum.

In a daring attempt to create something truly unique, coherent and first of its kind, Utsavi and team conceptualised this short film. This film is an extension of the sonic storytelling. Khata the film breaks the usual concept of music videos by featuring one minute of each song that effectively moves the story forward.

In a short span of releasing music, Utsavi has become a promising voice in independent music with her versatility, unique sound, personal storytelling and consistent hard-work. Utsavi made her acting and playback singing debut with a pivotal storyline in the National Award-winning movie “Gulmohar”. Her Hindi and English songs span genres like jazz pop, pop rock, electro pop, boss nova, ballad, blues rock, dream pop, etc. Her listeners also deeply resonate with her lyrics and find comfort and connection in her songs. She also composes and writes for other artists, having penned songs for artists like Shilpa Rao and Gajendra Verma. Her soulful songs like Saanjh and Tum Jaise Ho independently crossed millions of streams gathering a loyal listener-base, electro-pop songs like Piya introduced a unique electro-pop sound to listeners, while Khata from her debut EP went on a Spotify Viral Chart in Dubai. She was the “Spotify Radar India” Artist in May 2023 and one of Amazon Music’s “Breakthrough Artists” in 2024.

Utsavi has performed on prestigious stages like NH7 Weekender, NMACC (opening for Ankur Tewari) and antiSOCIAL. Her immersive, evocative and energetic set filled with engaging stories of how her songs came to be are well-appreciated by the audience.
